SITUATION QUESTION:
-------------------------------------

What is making you uptight during this season today, this week, this month or this whole year? Some of you may even say -- this century? Whatever your main issue, how are you dealing with it?

---------------------
SOLUTIONS:
---------------------

This is the season to be joyful and give to others. A popular Christmas song says, it’s the most wonderful time of the year, but if you are already uptight, the holidays can bring additional tension.

Set yourself free! Give yourself a break! Give yourself a gift today! Make it a new perspective on your stressors and a new way of looking at how to enjoy the holidays.

Let’s take the holidays first. What stresses you most about them? Is it the Christmas shopping, parties, getting together with relatives, office parties and the politics, getting holiday cards written and out, or something else? Whether it involves work or home, take a few minutes to reflect on what is really important during this season. Just because you’ve always done the holidays a certain way doesn’t mean you need to continue doing them that way again. Start some new traditions as you keep some of the established ones too. Dare to be different this year!

A couple of years ago, my husband and I went on a two-week cruise over Christmas. That was the year I discovered how easy it was to simplify the process. We still did the important things but eliminated a lot of the others. That year we exchanged gifts early, didn’t attend as many functions and didn’t send cards at all. We still felt the spirit of the season and enjoyed it without the added stress.

Ask yourself how you can cut corners, eliminate or modify what you usually do. Work smarter, not harder to accomplish what is important to you this season. Example: Send Christmas cards or letters in mass by email, give gift cards, give a service to be delivered after the season, buy baked goods instead of making them or ask others in the family to make them for you.

Now for your other stressors, how can you set yourself free from those? An immediate solution would be to get organized and look for smarter, more efficient and unemotional ways to deal with them. Establish what you can change and what you can’t. What you can’t change—let it go for the time being. Work on what you CAN change.

Most uptight situations involve other people. Remember, you can’t change anyone else, you can only change yourself! But when you change yourself enough, you have a much greater chance of influencing others in a positive direction. Work to change yourself and your thinking first.

Let your creative mind lead you to immediate and long term possibilities. No situation is ever written in stone (so to speak) or unchangeable. So when you practice possibility thinking your creativity kicks in and the sky is the limit! Make some new traditions! Free yourself from feeling uptight about anything or anyone today. Let it go! It will help you see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel after all.

Now that you’re starting to set yourself free, enjoy the most wonderful time of the year!

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
